All of your hair follicle’s are tiny structure’s made of cells and connective tissue that surrounds the root of a hair. It exists within the dermis and the epidermis, the two top layers of the skin. Your hair sits within the follicle, and although the principle is pretty straight forward its functions are quite complex. We all have a rough idea of how to care for our hair, but how can we care for our hair follicles?

Pay Attention to Your Protein Levels

Hair may be “dead” but it is also protein. If there’s a deficiency of protein in your diet there’s a good chance it was be reflective in the health of your hair.There are many ways to ensure you get enough protein in your diet – if you have any questions as to your own individual needs its best to discuss your options with a dietitian.

Manage Your Stress

Stress is said to be the cause of many illnesses and conditions, and hair loss is no exception. Sometimes stress can cause people to pull put their hair or may cause hair to fall out on its own. For these reasons, its important that you manage your stress through proper exercise, diet, and even meditation. Maybe reading helps you unwind, or nightly walks help you rest better – whatever it is, if its conducive to your mental health then make it a priority.

Dont Skip Out on Sleep

Getting very little sleep used to be considered “the cool thing to do”, but we’ve since come to learn its actually quite damaging. Being under-rested can cause us to be distracted and unproductive throughout our day. Most importantly, its terrible for our health. Most people need between 7 and 8 hours of sleep a night; that’s when our bodies recharge, rebuilding and fortifying muscles, bones, skin, and hair.

When you’re not sleeping properly your body has a harder time restoring to a normal state.

Hit the sheets early and dont be afraid to sleep in on the weekends – its good for you.

Junk Food? No Thank You

This one is easy. A healthy diet matters. Avoid foods that are heavily processed and which are high in sugar and unhealthy fats. Your hair (and your body) will thank you for it.

Love Your Scalp

A 2016 study found that a four-minute scalp massage administered every day for 24 weeks resulted in increased hair thickness, suggesting that increased blood flow makes your hair happier. So, book in for a weekly scalp massage to stimulate your hair follicles, ask your partner, or do it yourself while your relaxing and watching television.

Dont be Too Rough on Your Hair

Hot water, 400 degree straighteners, and blow dryers all cause damage to your hair. Brushing your hair too frequently (in excess) can also be very damaging to your locks. Using quality (natural) shampoos and conditioners, being gentle when putting your hair up, and avoiding styling products when possible will help keep your hair its healthiest.

See Your Stylist Regularly

A lot of women avoid regular trims because they want their hair as long as possible, and this is a big no. Trimming your hair every 4-6 weeks will help to keep it healthy. Its also a good idea to build an open relationship with your stylist or barber. Ask them how your scalp looks, if they see any thinning or dryness, and rely on them to be your second set of eyes. It’s what they’re there for!
