DID ELON MUSK GET A HAIR TRANSPLANT?

Tech CEO and visionary Elon Musk has made headlines for many years – for his formidable wealth, his outlandish behavior, and most recently, his highly visible lawsuit with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that forced him to step down from his role as the chair of electric car manufacturer Tesla. Though Musk lives a highly public life in many respects, one thing about him that is much more of a carefully guarded secret is whether or not he got hair transplant surgery.

Did He, or Didn’t He?

If you look at photos of Elon Musk from the early 2000s, like this one, it’s easy to see that the former CEO of PayPal had a significantly receding hairline, with very thin, fine hair on top of his head. However, more recent photos show the 47-year-old billionaire with a thick, full head of hair. Since the hair growth looks very natural, it’s highly likely he’s had at least one hair transplant surgery between the early 2000s and today.

In looking at early pictures, it appears the tech entrepreneur was an excellent candidate for hair restoration surgery. He had plenty of healthy donor hair growing on the back and sides of his head, which a skilled surgeon could easily have transplanted to the front half of his scalp for successful results.

Hair Transplant Technology

Though Musk remains mum about whether he underwent surgery, the hair he has today looks far more natural than a wig. So which technique did his doctor use? Rapid advancements in hair transplant technology make it difficult to detect, but it’s likely Musk had either a follicular unit transplantation (FUT) or a follicular unit extraction (FUE), both of which are highly innovative procedures.

FUT vs. FUE

FUT, also known as strip surgery, involves extracting a strip of hair from the back of your head and cutting the strip into individual hair grafts. This option is an excellent choice for patients with widespread hair loss who want to get the maximum number of healthy grafts within one surgical session. Though the procedure does leave a linear scar across the back of the head, the scar is usually very fine and easy to hide with new hair growth.

In contrast to FUT, FUE is a technique in which a surgeon removes individual small bunches of hair from a donor area and reinserts them into the balding areas on the top and sides of the head, carefully placing them to grow in the same direction as the hair that is already there. The main advantage of FUE is that it has no visible scarring and requires no stitches.

Though both FUT and FUE are the most advanced procedures available today for restoring hair growth to both male and female patients, FUE is notable for producing extremely natural-looking results. However, if you are considering emulating Elon Musk and getting either of these two procedures, you should discuss the pros and cons with a skilled surgeon who specializes in hair restoration techniques.
